BEER FILTRATION
Innovative and Reliable Solutions
Filtration has been a proven method for thousands of years to improve shelf life, stability and clarity of beer. The filtration step removes undesired constituents from beer for a product of highest value. For brewers it is still the most efficient and reliable way to give beer it’s final touches before handing it over to the consumers.
Filtration to ensure best quality
And right there, as filtration usually is that final touch to the finished product, it is one of the most critical steps in the brewing process. It is very important for brewers to preserve all the positive qualities of the beer without having to compromise on quality. We understand this and offer the brewer individual solutions with the highest quality standards from small to industrial scale.
Ultimately, the choice of clarification method will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of beer being brewed, the desired clarity, and the available equipment and resources. Depth filtration technologies offer highly flexible solutions for a wide range of applications in the brewery. The following information describes typical usage examples in the brewery environment. Variations of these examples or further applications should be considered depending on desired filtration needs and required final product quality.
After conditioning beer is filtered to establish different final product qualities. Coarse filtration will help to maintain a stable natural haze. By the removal of any remaining yeast and precipitated protein and polyphenol haze material, filtration plays a key role to provide a physical-chemical stable product. Sterile filtration ensures microbiological stabilization by eliminating yeasts and bacteria that could negatively impact beer shelf life.
The following filtration steps are common during beer production:
Coarse Filtration
Removal of: Hop particles, yeast conglomerates, protein compounds
Recommended filter media: Filter sheets, filter modules
Method: Pre-coat filtration
Trap Filtration
Removal of: Filter aids
Recommended filter media: Filter cartridges
Fine Filtration
Removal of: Proteins, yeast, polyphenols, glucans
Recommended filter media: Filter sheets, filter modules
Sterile Filtration
Removal of: Microorganisms, yeast
Recommended filter media: Filter sheets, filter modules, filter cartridges
We tailor-make individual filtration solutions from single cartridge installations to fully automated filtration skids. The latest development for craft brewers is the DISCSTAR® H, a horizontal filter solution to make manual handling easier, turnarounds quicker and regeneration of the filter media more efficient. Especially for dry hopped beers and one-step filtration the best solution.

Limitations |
Removes only surface deposits (yeasts, protein compounds, hops, etc.) | The filter life depends heavily on the sedimentation effects and pre-treatment of the beer (storage, dry hopping, etc.) | Removes larger particles such as filter aids, no adsorption effects |
Filter sheets and lenticular grades

RECOMMENDED APPLICATION |
AF 11 | Coarse Filtraton | Ideal sheet for pre-filtration of dry-hopped or other naturally hazy beers. |
AF 21 | Fine Filtration | For coarse filtration. Perfect for dark beers, IPA’s or where a slight turbidity is desired. |
AF 31 | Fine Filtration | Polishing filtration for ales, amber and lighter beers. Unique filter surface for higher particle loads. |
AF 41 | Fine Filtration | Medium clarification and brilliance. Suitable for most beer types. |
AF 71 | Fine Filtration | For Export, Pilsner or other types of bright beers. Ideal where long shelf life is required. The beer is almost yeast free after filtration. |
AF 101 | Fine Filtration | Removal of yeast and strong improvement of microbiological stability. |
AF 130 | Sterile Filtration | Sterile filtration of all beers. |
